Breitling Orbiter 3 has come to rest in the entrance hall of Washington's prestigious Smithsonian Air and Space museum along with Lindbergh's Spirit of St-Louis, the Wright brothers' plane and the Apollo 11 capsule.
The pilots were feted around the world and were received by a number of monarchs and heads of state. They were awarded the Olympic Order, the Youth and Sport Medal and their honours included the highest distinctions from the FAI (World Air Sports Federation), the National Geographic Society, the Explorers Club, the American Academy of Achievement as well as numerous aeronautical and scientific societies in Europe, America and Asia.
An Honorary Professor, Bertrand Piccard also received honorary doctorates in Science and Letters, the Légion d'Honeur, the Grand Prix of the French Academy of Moral and Political Sciences and was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations (UNFPA). As from the 2000 edition of the French Larousse encyclopaedia his name appears alongside his father and grandfather
